The twelfth articulation or consonant, and the sixteenth letter of the English alphabet, is formed by closely compressing the lips, and separating them suddenly with an explosive emission of breath, as in part, pap. It is sometimes silent, as in psalm, receipt; and before h it is usually sounded as f, as in philosophy, phantom.
